It’s important that both health and social care services have a clear approach to supporting people with dementia, their families and their carers.
Last year, Warwickshire County Council implemented a Dementia Awareness Programme. With a budget of £15.000, their learning solution was made up of a two day face-to-face / classroom based session. They were able to run 20 sessions, which allowed 400 people to participate in the programme. This resulted in a total of 800 days away from the office at a cost of £37.50 per person.
This year, with the help of the Learning Pool team, Warwickshire introduced e-learning to their Dementia Awareness Programme. They were able to provide a blended learning programme that allowed learners to complete seven e-learning modules and then attend a half day facilitated workshop to develop individual action plans, more than doubling the number of learners.
This blended approach enabled the development of 820 people with just 410 days spent away from the office at a reduced cost of £18.30 per person.
“Learning Pool have supported us to develop high quality content, and feedback from our learners has been extremely positive. It has enabled us to deliver a more interactive, immersive learning experience and are very pleased with the results.”
With less time spent delivering the information in a classroom setting, the L&D team were able to spend more time focusing on developing action plans with learners. Sessions of Dementia Friends were incorporated into the half day programme. This is a national directive with local targets, and the introduction of this increased the number of Dementia Friends in Warwickshire.
Adding online training to the programme has allowed Warwickshire County Council to work together with other organisations to create Dementia Friendly Communities and at least 100% more people are able to participate, saving £19.20 per person and reducing time spent away from the office by half.
