‘Plain English’ can be best defined as instruction or information that the intended audience can read, understand and act upon the first time that they read it. It’s an undertaking that involves design and layout, as well as language. This module outlines the basics of plain English. It will help you learn how to get your message across quickly and clearly. Several practical writing exercises are included.
Learners will understand what we mean by ‘plain English’, and the efforts of the Plain English Campaign. They will be aware of the negative impact that confusing or misleading written information can have on customer satisfaction, why we need to tailor our language (especially jargon and terminology) to our audience and the benefit of using simpler words and phrases, as opposed to longer or more ‘official’ language.
