RIPA provides a legal framework for the control and regulation of surveillance and covert monitoring, ensuring individuals’ right to privacy, under the Human Rights Act, is properly considered. Local authorities are permitted to obtain RIPA authorization to carry out covert surveillance activities, but only for the prevention or detection of crime where the offense carries a maximum custodial sentence of at least six months imprisonment.
