Totara LMS 9: What’s new, what’s next and what’s yet to come

Our in-house Totara LMS experts,  Learning Consultant Sam Morgan and Mark Lynch, CTO at Learning Pool, co-hosted the webinar to demonstrate the evolution of the open-source platform, as well as the key features that contribute to make the LMS so powerful.

Totara LMS 9  The latest release

Since forking from Moodle’s core code last year, Totara LMS has been able to focus on rapid feature development and innovation that specifically targets enterprise organisations.

Totara LMS version 9 is the first release after their decision to forge a new approach and they have made multiple improvements to the platform that include new functionality, improved workflows and standardised terminology.

One of the key new features is the introduction of seminar management which gives you full control over your blended learning programmes and face-to-face courses.

With Google location custom fields and venues now selectable by available date, the powerful new functionally allows you to easily manage all aspects of your offline and classroom learning activities.

Sam and Mark also showcased Totara LMS’s new, modernised look and feel which is now even more user-friendly than before. The platform has improved site hierarchy and navigation as well as adopted a new default theme.

The new font based icons allow for more control of icon size and colour allowing your LMS to be more flexible and customised exactly to your brand requirements.

How do I adopt 9.1 in my organisation?

With webinar attendees asking how they can upgrade to Totara LMS 9.1, Sam and Mark demonstrated the deployment process, which highlighted the timescales for customers to get their hands on the latest release.

The support team at Learning Pool are busy completing upgrades from current releases straight to Totara LMS 2.9 which include the all-important seminar management and registration approval.

From there, the next set of upgrades will commence in February 2017 where customers will have the opportunity to choose between Totara LMS 9.1 and Totara Evergreen.

What’s Totara Evergreen?

Totara Evergreen gives users the opportunity to upgrade quicker than the usual annual release, by implementing more consistent and regular code updates as they are developed. Initially starting once a month, opting for the Evergreen release means you will have rolling, on-going access to new features and functionality once they are ready to go live.

If you choose to go ahead with this release option there will be no disruptions or downtime to your LMS service and it will be a quicker and easier upgrade procedure. Discover more about Totara Evergreen and see if it’s the right release option for your organisation here.
