The second facilitated week of our ‘Understanding Impact: The Final xAPI Frontier’ OLX – in which we explored Personas – has come to an end. ‘Personas’; can be used within Learning Locker, are essentially profiles which outline the specific details and areas of interest for the individual learner.

If you’ve struggled a little with some of the language we’ve used so far – fear not! Just like most of you I am a complete newbie to all of this xAPI terminology, and I’m certainly learning lots along the way.

Throughout the levels of our Week 2 installment, our experts will firstly help you to understand what we mean by ‘Personas’; efficiently explaining the problems that Personas can help solve, and demonstrate how you can use Personas to combine data from multiple sources and add attributes to people for filtering.

What Are Personas?

To begin, we must first outline what is meant by the term ‘Personas’ in the context of Learning and Analytics. Personas are considered and detailed profiles designed to reflect the goals, interests, educational background and specific skills of a learner.

Personas are used by Instructional Designers to help understand their audience when designing courses or learning initiatives, ensuring courses are engaging and relevant to the end user.

In the OLX, our Learning Locker Project Manager, Ian Blackburn, explains that Personas represent an actual person, or learner, and hold a combination or zero or more identifiers and attributes which help in distinguishing between users.

Typically, users must have at least one identifier. This results in the following structure:

The larger the organisation, the more crucial Personas become. Information regarding a user, including organisation, language preference, job role and, even, location, are important when analysing their learning data.

If you would like more detailed information regarding Personas, why you need them and, how to use them, check out Ian’s Progressive Personas blog, live on the Learning Pool (formerly HT2 Labs)  website.

What Can We Learn From Week 2?

Learning Pool’s (formerly HT2 Labs) Ian and Ryan, begin this week’s OLX by discussing Personas with Haitham, the Senior Director of Technology at Kineo. The trio consider how the use of xAPI and Personas, within the Learning Locker, allows for more data to be captured within Learning Analytics initiatives.

As with last week, our aim for these summarisation blog posts is to dilute the content included across all levels of the OLX, so that the content is easily understood by all our learners, despite your level of experience with xAPI and the like.

Below, you will again find a list of carefully considered key learning points taken from this week’s installment of the #LearnxAPI OLX, as well as links that’ll lead you directly to the more technical explanation should you decide you can handle it!
