BackgroundBackground

With over 30 years of trading, Penny On The Move has grown into a major player in the UK petrol forecourt sector. It’s now the fifth-largest independent operator with over 90 sites and around 1,000 employees.

The company strives to offer a comprehensive service to customers, from fuel and convenience goods to partnerships with Spar and Costcutter.

However, this rapid growth presented some challenges, particularly in ensuring that colleagues were well-supported and compliant with the fuel industry's stringent regulations.

ChallengeChallenge

Penny On The Move’s exponential growth over the last 10 years presented a core challenge: maintaining rigorous compliance within the highly regulated fuel industry. The company understood that consistent and comprehensive training was essential to mitigate risks associated with safety, environmental regulations, and operational procedures. As they expanded to over 90 sites, ensuring that every employee adhered to these standards became increasingly difficult.

In addition, supporting employees in their roles evolved into a multifaceted challenge. It wasn't just about providing basic job training; it was about empowering them with the knowledge and skills to deliver excellent customer service, handle diverse operational tasks, and adapt to the company's evolving culture

Penny On The Move was looking for a learning solution that could address both compliance and performance, while scaling effectively to accommodate a growing workforce.

Solution

Initially, Penny On The Move adopted a learning platform offering ready-made courses. However, the limitations of this approach quickly became apparent, as the lack of industry-specific content led to disengagement and critical knowledge gaps.

To transform their learning strategy, Penny On The Move partnered with Learning Pool. This partnership provided access to both modern, off-the-shelf collections from Learning Pool's extensive content library and adaptive authoring functionality enabling the creation of bespoke, industry-relevant training.

The result was a comprehensive training package comprising over 90 courses, effectively blending tailored off-the-shelf content with in-house developed, industry-specific modules.

Outcomes

This transformation has delivered significant improvements. A significant 14% increase in completion rates was achieved within the first year. And by introducing 'smart revision' courses, refresher training time was cut by 75% (from one hour to 15 minutes), significantly boosting learner engagement. This allowed colleagues to quickly validate their knowledge and focus on targeted learning.

Learning Pool's platform has also empowered Penny On The Move to provide role-based training, ensuring colleagues receive only relevant content. The integration of Appraisal and Learning Plans into performance reviews has further streamlined development processes, providing a structured space for action plans, and supporting career development across the organisation.
