BackgroundBackground

Tearfund is a Christian charity that partners with local churches in more than 50 of the world’s poorest countries. They work to relieve poverty, respond to disasters, and fight injustice, helping communities transform their own lives.

Tearfund identified an opportunity to strengthen staff capabilities in constructive disagreement and conflict resolution. This feedback was also corroborated by other internal sources.

As a result, Tearfund's L&D team approached Learning Pool to explore potential development opportunities to upskill their staff and improve understanding of effective conflict resolution strategies.

ChallengeChallenge

Tearfund recognised a learning gap in their organisational capabilities. The learning requirement among employees to "disagree well" and approach conflict professionally was leading to strained working relationships and unproductive disagreements across the organisation.

This lack of conflict resolution skills was directly hindering how well Tearfund's teams worked together. It also posed a challenge to effectively carrying out Tearfund's vital global mission.

So, the main challenge was clear—they needed to support employees in developing the practical skills to express their views and needs clearly, even when facing disagreement. This meant teaching them to use effective strategies to manage and resolve conflicts constructively.

Most importantly, they needed to maintain and build stronger working relationships by engaging with conflict skillfully. Achieving this was important for creating a more harmonious and productive environment that truly supported Tearfund's impactful work.

Solution

Recognising the important need for effective conflict resolution skills, Tearfund partnered with Learning Pool. Learning Pool provided a comprehensive eLearning module on conflict resolution, which was made available to a team within Tearfund for a six-week period.

The module was designed to offer clear benefits, including gaining insight into the causes and types of workplace conflict, enhancing approaches to resolving issues constructively, and learning everyday measures to prevent future disharmony.

A follow-up to the training revealed positive feedback amongst their learner, particularly on the module's content, navigation, and the quality and effectiveness of Learning Pool's content in meeting Tearfund's specific development needs.

Outcomes

Learning Pool's conflict resolution eLearning module proved highly effective in addressing Tearfund's challenges. Feedback from the course showed that 91% of respondents felt it improved their understanding of the subject

The module also received strong ratings: Content (4.3 out of 5), Level of learning (4.1 out of 5), Interactive elements (3.8 out of 5), Navigation (4.4 out of 5), and Length of module (4.5 out of 5). These high scores, especially for navigation and length, highlight the user-friendly design and effective pacing characteristic of Learning Pool's off-the-shelf content

Crucially, 8/10 of participants felt the module couldn't be improved, demonstrating the solution effectively met expectations. Overall, the results confirm Learning Pool was the right choice for Tearfund, effectively supporting them in helping staff to manage conflict professionally and foster stronger relationships.
