Human error remains the leading cause of security breaches. Here’s what to do.

As we navigate the complexities of the digital age, remember that human error remains a leading cause of security breaches. That’s why we’re sharing three must-dos every employee at your organization can easily do within their day-to-day responsibilities to protect your organization from cybersecurity threats:

1. Stay alert for phishing attempts and handle them appropriately

Phishing attacks are a constant threat, often disguised as communications from trusted sources. Be wary of emails or messages with unexpected errors, requests for sensitive information, or an unusual sense of urgency. Never click suspicious links or open attachments, and always verify the authenticity of messages through alternate channels. Forward phishing emails to your organization’s designated inbox or IT helpdesk, if you have one, for further guidance.

2. Protect your passwords

Strong, protected passwords are your first line of defense. Follow company policies on password complexity and the use of multifactor authentication, password managers, and generators. Never share your passwords with anyone, even trusted coworkers and IT personnel.

3. Report suspected compromises immediately

If you suspect any unauthorized access or compromise of your work device, report it immediately to your manager, information security personnel, or another appropriate internal resource. Prompt reporting is crucial in containing the issue, minimizing damage, and preventing future incidents.
