How Modern Learning Experiences Are Changing
The OLX’s first in-depth discussion looked to the future, with learners suggesting their top predictions for industry trends they expect to see emerging in the next 12-18 months.
Common predictions tended to focus more on dynamic content delivery, with micro-learning at the forefront closely followed by personalized, interactive and adaptive learning.
This stands to reason, considering the vast strides made in recent years in the development of learning analytics systems now sophisticated enough to shape the front-end experience based on the individual needs of the learner.
As reflected with numerous mentions in both the article and comments, xAPI is leading the charge in powering these hotly-tipped trends (but you knew that, right?).
Another suggestion is that of subscription-based tools; an idea mirrored closely in the discussion object article. The ability of cloud-based tools to rapidly and constantly improve gives commercial weight to the ‘learning as a service’ model, both future-proofing and reducing the upfront investment that an organization needs to make in their learning ecosystem. In this pursuit, the reduced commitment that the subscription-based model offers is more appropriate for organizations looking to prove impact before committing to long-term cost.
Creating Social & Personalized Learning Experiences
For global organizations, implementing social learning principles into their L&D initiatives is imperative if they are to efficiently distribute resources and train their staff in a timely manner.
The cost and logistical challenge of traditional ‘top-down’ elearning often becomes too much of a burden at this scale, and may even begin to outweigh ROI. Social learning works well to mitigate traditional limitations by encouraging knowledge sharing and user-generated content.
While this idea isn’t totally new, and you’ve probably experienced a form of social learning in your day-to-day role; the 2nd and 3rd levels of the OLX helped develop on it with some real world examples and use cases.
General Electric – present in over 180 countries and with 300,000+ employees – provide our first example of the social learning solution in action.
By implementing principles of community, networking and feedback they were able to replicate the push-pull dynamic of the real-world classroom and engage vast numbers of their workforce.
As this practice is becoming commonly adopted amongst high-turnover international organizations, the industry have responded with the Learning Experience Platform – a one-stop-shop for creating and managing impactful learning at scale.
Personalization – another industry hot-topic – naturally follows on from the ‘social’ school of thought and is addressed together with adaptive learning in the OLX.
The stand-out example here is Reach, the Learning Pool Learning Record Store App eloquently described by Learning Pool (formerly HT2 Labs)’ own Customer Success Manager Craig as an app that allows you to set up triggers (emails, content, warnings, commendations – you name it) to be sent to you, personally based upon what you, personally have, or have not, achieved in a particular learning context.
In simpler terms, Reach provides timely, personalized and actionable feedback to your learners. Jump into the level to learn more about Reach (and why you should be excited about it).
Learning From Your Learning Data
“Behind every great modern learning experience is someone struggling to make use of the data” is a quote that I just made up.
However, this is (more than) likely to be the case unless you’re proactively learning from the data that your systems are giving you.
The Learning Record Store (LRS) is the key here, and goes hand in hand with xAPI as the foundation on which successful modern learning initiatives are built.
We’ve explored this idea in detail in the penultimate level of the OLX, offering some key learnings that we’ve achieved when creating and delivering a number of free courses and engaging in a lively discussion with our brilliant learners around which of the 4 Levels of Learning Analytics we’ve dealt with in our roles.
One of the more exciting discussion points in this level was the potential surrounding Semantic Analysis. Here, Channels Product Manager Emma explores the success Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) had in their pursuit of Brilliant Conversations.
