BMJ Learning is a leading international provider of high-quality online CPD and continuing medical education for doctors and other healthcare professionals. They offer hundreds of accredited, peer-reviewed learning modules in text, video, and audio formats.

BMJ Learning had a range of legacy learning content which had been written in-house in an XML format. Specifically, there were 538 learning modules written across 5 different languages, housed in their own LMS.

The content is used around the world by doctors and medical practitioners and licenced either through individual or institutional subscription, or by being a member of the BMA. The content covers a huge range of medical subjects, from identifying measles to different types of cancer.

The format was not scalable, with the content team having to engage developers every time they wanted to amend a course or create something new. Finding themselves unable to react to the needs of their customer, BMJ Learning looked to reauthor every course in a new authoring tool, that would allow the content to be scalable and fully editable. They considered employing an agency staff member to complete the work, but this proved cost prohibitive and would have taken a significant period of time.

What we did

BMJ Learning engaged with Learning Pool to tackle the issue and we proposed creating a sophisticated script that would allow them to automatically convert every XML course into a new Adapt builder format, with the touch of a button.

This had huge advantages for BMJ Learning over the alternative option of reauthoring each course as it reduced the potential of human error when recreating the material and naturally, saved a considerable amount of time.

To complete the conversion, we conducted a mapping exercise which looked at each type of interaction and built up a set of rules which told the script how to treat that type of content in the new format. Initially we created trial runs with around twenty courses at a time; courses that featured every type of functionality and were in English.

Once these were converted we conducted a QA exercise to test the content and this process flushed out any minor tweaks that were needed in the script or any previously missed errors that already existed in the original content. We then moved on to the multi-language content, ensuring the script worked effectively across all languages.

BMJ Learning Product Manager

“Working with Learning Pool was a hugely positive experience. Without their assistance it would have taken our small team years to convert this amount of content. The fact that Learning Pool could get on with this work, with minimal input from the team, meant we could focus on essential ‘Business As Usual’ work.”

The creation of the script to convert the 538 courses to the new Adapt format has resulted in a significant saving for BMJ Learning when compared to the alternative cost of re-authoring the content from scratch.

The content team now have the ability to make changes and publish new content easily, bringing courses to market much more quickly. The content is now responsive, allowing much more flexibility to view on different devices.
